It's another rainy day, but luckily we're spending the time indoors at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. We stop for coffee and croissants first at Cafe La Granja, opened since 1926.
Even though we're there early in the morning, the line-up for the museum still stretches out the door and up the stairs. We get inside and wander through the various exhibits. I like the Küba videos by Kutluğ Ataman, which shows 40 interviews of people from a shantytown in Istanbul running simultaneously on 40 different television sets. Another standout is Richard Serra's giant metal sculptures, which force you to experience space and orientation differently as you walk throught them. Photos aren't permitted in the main exhibition halls, but I sneak a few of the sculptures.
We go out to admire the exterior of the Guggenheim and the sculptures around it.
Famished from all the art, we grab some sandwiches and pastries from a convenient store/bakery and then walk through Parque de Doña Casilda Iturrizar. We also do some shopping as the end of summer sales are too good to pass up. It's colder than I expected in northern Spain...I need some jeans...and even though we hand wash our clothes quite regularly, things aren't so fresh in our packs anymore.
For dinner, it's more pintxos! In the foreground, a mix of jamon, mayonnaise and cheese, and behind it canard mousse with a tangy jelly and a walnut. And we also split a plate of fried calamari, yum! And finally, I get my churros and chocolate at Cafe Lago. Sophia will only nibble on the churros, but won't partake of the chocolate...she ain't got no sweet toof. More for me!! The chocolate is thick, like a hot pudding.
