We head to Cangas de Onis next, which is close to the Picos de Europa National Park. The Picos are the mountain range that separates Asturia and Cantabria provinces in the north from the rest of Spain. From Santander, we take a bus and transfer in Arriondas to Cangas de Onis.
In Arriondas we have some time for coffee while we wait for the other bus. Ooooo...it comes with a donut....take a bite...blehh...licorice flavoured?
Cangas de Onis is a cute, small town, more for tourists. We stay at the Hotel Monteverde, which is conveniently located across the river from the bus station. We walk around town and see the Puente Romano (Roman bridge) at one end of Cangas.
We pick up some things from the supermarket for sandwichs and sit by the river to enjoy our lunch. I man walking his dog doesn't believe our plastic knife is good enough to cut open our bread and offers his pocket knife on his belt.
For dinner we head back to Puente Romano Restaurant, right next to the bridge. We try the Sidra (cider) that is customarily poured from a height above your head to a cup, often splashing all over the place. Neither Sophia or I like it very much...it tastes like olive juice. We also try fabada, a bean stew with pieces of sausage in it. We hope there's nothing fishy in it, or Sophia will collapse on the sidra soaked ground. It's tasty, but it's a whole lotta beans to get through.
