Today we plan to hike the Garganta Del Cares (Cares Gorge) that runs through the middle of the Picos de Europa. We find a bus route specifically for the Cares Walk that will drop us in a town call Posada de Valdeón from where we can walk to the beginning of the gorge hike in Caín and end in Pocebos.
It takes us over an hour to walk Cain and we haven't even hit the gorge yet. But the landscape is beautiful and Sophia is happy with her new hiking stick.
We finally reach Cain and enter the gorge. Lots of tunnels in the side of the gorge from the Cain end of the hike.
The gorge walk is about 10km. and there's some loose rocks and narrow passages. I don't know how these older ladies do it in slip on sandals.
We end in Pocebos. However, it's just a road with a few restaurants and a parking lot. We're not sure where to wait for the bus as the posting in the bus station said. On closer inspection of our return tickets, it says from Arenas de Cabrales for 17:35. It's already 17:25 and Arenas is 6 km. away.
We walk to a hotel up the road to ask for information. Some men having coffee ask if they can help in Spanish. The are driving in the direction of Arenas de Cabrales so they offer us a ride. The drop us off in Arenas and point to the corner where we need to wait for the bus. It's 17:45. We hope the bus is late. On the schedule it says it's the last bus to Cangas de Onis for the day.
We manage to get a taxi back to Cangas de Onis. We're exhausted and hungry, so we have dinner at Restauranted El Abuelo (Grandpa's).
The have little abuelo statues that are Sidra pourers. You place a glass in it's hand and push a button in the back of his head and out comes some cider. He stands on the table ready to be of service. I try the peas and ham appetizer, a typical dish of Cangas, followed by grilled salmon and potatoes and a vanilla pudding. I was expecting a home-made dessert, but the waitress brings out a store bought pudding cup on a plate.
We go for a bit of souvenir shopping and find Yvo a purse. She asked us to be on the lookout ever since she saw someone else's purse from Spain.
