Today we decide to take the ferry to the island of Procida in the Gulf of Naples. We make our way down to the Port Molo Beverello to get our tickets. We've missed the earlier morning ferries, so we have a wander before the next one leaves around 12:30.
Some crosswalks have no traffic lights, so it's all boldness and faith that will get you to the other side. Hopefully the vehicles see you and slow down as you cross, while vehicles maintain their pace in front and behind you. When in doubt, stick with the locals.
A big wall surrounds the marina and there's an elevator that takes us up to the top of the wall and the Piazza del Plebiscito, one of the main squares in Naples. We also pass through the Galleria Umberto I, a beautiful public shopping gallery with glass vaulted ceilings.
We hop on the ferry and it's a 40min. ride to Procida. It's quiet as lots of the businesses are closed for the afternoon and the sun is blazing. Lots of people are scootering off to the beach. We try to follow the string of scooters to one of the larger beaches, but it's just too far and it's just too hot! We give up and head back to the port for cold drinks and snacks.
We head back to Naples for some rest and spend some quiet time in Piazza Bellini.
And finally, the moment we've been waiting for, PIZZA! in the birthplace of pizza. We have dinner at Gino Sorbillo's Pizzeria, well reknowned in Napoli. We order a Pizza Margherita (tomato and cheese) and one with artichokes, ham and mozarella. They arrive larger than the plates they come on. They are delicious with fresh ingredients and chewy cheese bits. We each have a quarter of a pizza left that we save for breakfast. I know I will dream of this pizza for years to come.
